One of my best friend sent this to me when I was feeling down. It reminded me of the treasures I have.
I wondered a lot growing up, what does "friendship" mean. At times, it felt like I was going through freshman year again and again in high school. Every year was new curriculum, new teachers, new classmates, new rules, new popular trend... new friends.
At some schools, we all gathered together like a big flock of bird. It was always chit-chat and music. My social circle was a good 40, 50 people. It's amazing how we all fitted in one house on the weekends. At other schools, there were smaller circles - no more than 4, 5 people at lunch together. We had inside jokes and silly games. Some friends lasted through the years and even now I still hear from them. Other disappeared as soon as my plane left the horizon.
It used to bother me that friends can be so close and yet how easily it is to loose the friendship. A couple of week and across an ocean, suddenly there weren't much to talk about. Suddenly there are things in their life that you don't know and will never understand. You couldn't keep track of their worries and they forgot what you were doing on the other side of the world.
Yet, looking back now, I think I was simply too caught up on trying to define the word. Friendship is having fun together. Is being able to joke and laugh. It's creating memories together and treasuring the time you have with each other. Friendship might be no more than seeing their wedding announcements on Facebook but that's okay. I can still wish them happiness and thank them for being wonderful friends.
So this is to my good friends, even the ones I don't really talk to anymore.
